A brief Introduction…Along with a Match Review/Preview Combo
By: Ryan | June 16th, 2009Seeing as this is my first post for the Rhinos Offside, I think a quick introduction is in order. My name is Ryan and I am a native of Rochester, growing up in Fairport. I’ve been playing football since I was able to walk, and I have been involved at every level in Western, New York. I’ve been following the Rhinos since their inception (who else misses the ‘raging’ in the name), and am quite thrilled to be able to write about them.
Now that’s more than enough about me, let’s get to the subject at hand, The Lamar-Hunt US Open Cup. Rochester still is the only non-MLS team to win the Open Cup, and honestly that is my favorite piece of silverware we have earned in our history (but let’s not forget our 3 League titles). After winning our opening match against Pittsburgh Riverhounds, we are drawn against the Cleveland City Stars.
While I don’t know much about the city stars roster, I do know about our most recent match against them, a devastating 3-0 loss in Cleveland. Saturday started off well enough for Rochester, creating some great chances in the early minutes, including a heartbreaking miss by Tai Atieno only seven minutes in. Rochester was also given two free kicks in great position, only to watch them go wide. The first half ended scoreless 0-0, and it looked like Rochester was in position to get their first league win since May.
After halftime, everything went horribly awry. Cleveland scored two goals in quick succession, followed by a third later in the second half. This lead proved to be too much of a task for the rhinos, as we dropped points yet another week.
Tonight is a chance to redeem ourselves, facing the same team except on our own home turf. And lets not also forget that we will be able to field our normal lineup. Redemption will be on the mind of all rhinos tonight when we kickoff is at 7:00pm in Marina Auto Stadium. For those of you who cannot attend the game in person, there is a live stream at usllive.com
Current League Standings:
Pts GP W L T GF GA
Rochester Rhinos 14 11 4 5 2 10 12
Cleveland City Stars 8 11 2 7 2 8 19

Welcome to the Offside. My name is Corey and I write on the Real Madrid page here. I am from Binghamton and went to school at St John Fisher for a year so I know all about Rochester, the Rhinos, and Fairport Hots! Looking forward to reading your stuff, hope you educate the world about garbage plates!

ryan/Schaafito is a longtime friend of mine (much better at footy than myself!) so everyone give him a double welcome! He’s a ManYoo fan…but we all can’t be perfect, right?
I’ve been following the Rhinos since their inception (who else misses the ‘raging’ in the name), and am quite thrilled to be able to write about them.
And the old logo. I still don’t understand the new one.

The raging part definitely needs to be back in the name. Also my track coach at college graduated from fairport in 01 or 02 I think.
Yes random I know, but I felt like I should mention it haha
