Darren Tilley Can See the Future
By: alessio | April 20th, 2009The rivalry between new franchise Carolina and its’ “parent” organization Rochester has become something fierce, very quickly. After an increasingly physical and nasty first half, (Railhawk Bundu was treated for a bloody shin in the first 15 minutes) coach Darren Tilley said this at halftime,” I told my players this referee is going to send someone off in the first 10 minutes.”
57′- Danny Earls ejected for a hard tackle on ex-Rhino Luke Kreamalmeyer.
Alright, so he was a minute or two off. But having said that, why, oh why, did a Rhinos midfield decide to go slamming through a player two minutes after Carolina scored? I’ m not saying Earls did it out of frustrration, as I did not see the game and can make no judgment; it could have very easily been an innocent enough challenge. As the Carolina coach said,”There’s been four red cards in two games here and there’s hardly been any bad tackles.”
Fair enough. 9 cards flashed during the game, two ejections for the Rhinos. Joining Earls for an early bath was everyones’ favorite fiery defender, John Ball, for saying something to the referee in the 90th minute the ref clearly did not appreciate, for a 2nd yellow. That’s a bit more irritating as it just reeks of poor discipline, but I love the guys work ethic and commitment, so we’ll let it go.
The Rhinos were under siege for most of the first half, conceding 11 corner kicks in the first half and conceding an (cancelled) offside goal in the 36th minute. Bundu, who shaked off the previous injury, scored the only goal of the game in the 54th minute with a sliding volley from 8 yards out. It was a much more open game in the 2nd half, with Ball and Salles having good opportunities on goal, but alas the Rhinos could not stage a comeback and succumbed to their first ever defeat against the Railhawks.
The team travels to Puerto Rico to take on the Islanders next Friday night.
