Revenge Is A Dish Best Servered 2-1 in Overtime

After a 3-0 loss to Cleveland Saturday, The Rhinos came storming out last night to top the City Stars in a 2-1 Overtime thriller. With the win Rochester advances to the third round of the US Open Cup, facing the defending champions, the Columbus Crew.
The game started much the same way as Saturday’s, with Rochester storming out, dominating possession and creating a multitude of chances early in the game. Menyongar, Earls, and Salles worked well to create these chances, and it seemed like Rochester would be the first on the board.
By the way, for those of you who weren’t able to watch, the 27th-35th minutes was pretty much one big acrobatic display from the rhinos. Salles started things off with a gorgeous bike that rattled off the crossbar, and quickly afterwards almost every Rhino (from forward to defender) attempted some sort of full bike or side volley. In the opening half, the Rhinos were definitely winning on style points.
The first 45 ended scoreless, and, as per the last meeting, Cleveland came out of halftime and was the first to score. Awarded a PK off a controversial correct call, Link from the Matrix Reloaded Ryan Stewart buried the PK as he got Vallow guessing the wrong direction.
Luckily, the rhinos ended their longtime scoring drought, finding the back of the net was Ryan Heins on a gorgeous shot sending the game to OT. In the second OT, Kenny Bertz headed home a textbook corner giving the Rhinos a 2-1 lead and a pass to the third round of the Open Cup.
The win was also made Scott Vallow the Rochester (Raging) Rhinos all-time win leader in franchise history. A title well earned in my book.
June 30th, the crew will be coming to town, and I hope everyone can make it to Marina Auto to watch.
The Rhino’s next match is Sunday where they’ll travel to face the Austin Aztex (unanimously voted the worst named team in USL-1).
