Rhinos start to accumulate points…0-0 Puerto Rico, 2-1 Miami
By: alessio | April 28th, 2009The beginning of this season was a bit worryingly like last season. A long start on the road, in which we had severe difficulties scoring until our now MLS-defender Scotty Palguta opened it up 5 games into the season. It was 8 before we were able to win. Luckily, the Rhinos were able to stop that trend in our third game. This is good enough news for us, but when you consider we are the first USL-1 team all season (15 games) to have won on the road, that is even better.
Last Friday, the Rhinos battled out to a 0-0 draw in Puerto Rico. With two of our starting defenders suspended, coach Darren Tilley had to shuffle around the defense. It worked. The team played well in the first half, applying good pressure on the Islanders while protecting Vallow in goal. In the second half, the Rhinos were much better in defense, using the teams height to our advantage. Scott Vallow and midfielder Mike Ambersley looked good in the game. In the 2nd game of the season, we picked up our first point.
Last night, the team finally got the season off to our start. Playing Miami FC in Florida, the team won 2-1 courtesy of a brace from Johnny Menyongar, who scored in the 8th and 44th minutes. I caught the 2nd half, unfortunately missing Johnny´s goals, but I just found that the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle has a blogger on their sports team…..who does liveblogs. That is pretty awesome. USL-Live is free, but if anyone missed a game it´s quite easy to hop on over to Devo´s Direct Kicks and read his play-by-play commentary.
Here´s his liveblogs for Puerto Rico and then Miami FC.
The Rhinos continue their road openers with an away game against new franchise Cleveland City this Friday night at 8pm. As always, it will be available for free on USL-Live.
